(poem) Gathering

Gathering

Robin Ford

I found this when I was tidying up my computer files. I can’t remember the occasion, but it’s a thought I often have. So here it is.

Gathering
Now, should a companion say “I know the meaning”
Of how it transpires we are here on this earth.”
It doesn’t much matter which way they are leaning,
To god is a figment, or true virgin birth.
What next can we say
That won’t get in the way
Of a good conversation. with pleasure and worth.

I might want to say, “I’ve another suggestion.”
But that didn’t work when I tried it before.
If they’ve nutted out such a long-standing question
My thoughts aren’t the first thing they’d want to explore.
To keep us on task
It is best if I ask
“Is that really so.  Would you please tell me more?”

This might be the start of a fine conversation
(Depending of course on the setting we’re in).
A time and a place for some free exploration,
Respectfully letting each thought have a spin
With planning and care
We’d aim to prepare
A welcoming space in which all of us win.
