(poem) Nursery rhymes for petrol heads 8. The great big four wheel drive (The grand old Duke of York)

The grand old Duke of York

Oh the grand old Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again
And when they were up they were up
And when they were down they were down
And when they were only halfway up
They were neither up nor down

The great big four wheel drive

Oh the great big four-wheel-drive
Two tyres upon the rack
Retrieval winch fixed to the front
Spare fuel-cans at the back
And where there is mud, snow or sand
It pushes on through as a rule
But most of its time it spends in town
Picking children up from school

Glossary

Retrieval winch    This is a motorised winch that can pull another vehicle – or your own – out of trouble.

  1. Hi Robin,
So pleased that I finally found your site amongst other Rhyme and Rwason sites and Robeen Fords.
I delighted in your magical whimsical poetry as another ‘old Pom’ when we had dinner at the Oddie’s on Sunday, and in sharing the meal together.

    • I too enjoyed our evening meal at the Oddies. I’m glad you finally found my blog. I’m not sure what the options are for you to post on the blog – but I can always post items for you if that turns out to be easiest.
