(poem) Sound and music: voice projection

Robin Ford, April 2019

new growth after a bushfire

Voice projection

I fill my lungs, then send the outward flow
Over my vocal cords so they vibrate,
And start a complex process to produce
A pressure wave that travels through the air.
I modulate this wave to carry meaning,
It might be speech, or song, or maybe weeping
And, if you know the coding, we might choose
To share our thoughts and feelings as we breathe.
Instinctively a child can learn to do it –
As natural as breathing some might say.
There isn’t much that’s natural about it
For magic is embedded in each voice.
It’s commonplace, mysterious, profound,
To share our thoughts by modulating sound
