A Secular Prayer for the Eve of Australia Day

Robin Ford, January 2020

As we gather on the eve of Australia Day 2020, we remember the people of the Eora Nation. On 25 January 1788 they could not know the disaster that would ensue the next day.

In years to come, despite resistance, they would be dispossessed, massacred, dispersed, and disrespected. In time, this would extend to First Nations throughout what is now called Australia.

And yet, these peoples and their cultures survive, continuing the ancient custodianship of their ancestors over the land upon which we all live.

Tomorrow we may choose to celebrate Australia’s achievements. But, as today closes, we acknowledge this history, honour the status of Australia’s First Peoples, and solemnly recommit ourselves to an Australia that respects human dignity and provides a fair go for all.
