(poem) For Pam

from an LP record cover

The setting
Five friends spent an afternoon together. We began with a concert in the old Sydney City Mission hall in Glebe, given by a choir that Pam had once belonged to. Pam, arriving early, had reserved seats for us all from the available miscellaneous collection of furniture. But which seat would suit which person?
Soon afterwards Pam was hit by a car while crossing the road and was fatally injured. The concert became a poignant memory.
I was reminded of this poem by Charissa’s mention of the Seekers in a recent comment.

For Pam

Robin Ford

Some shared a sofa, some chose straight-backed chairs.
We’re of an age where spine or hips can ache.
They sang a Seekers song, and ancient airs,
At interval, mulled wine and chocolate cake.
“Let’s have an early meal before we part.”
“This tapas restaurant will suit us fine.”
“Sangria for us all, before we start.”
“We’ll make our choices when you bring the wine.”
We said “Good-by. Let’s get together soon.”
We’d had a lovely, gentle afternoon.
To Morning Town the train would make its way.
One passenger is travelling inside.
The destination’s right across the bay.
The soulful whistle blowing ends the ride.
