I wrote this in tribute to my friend the late Dr Gerhardt Lowenthal AO. We would meet over coffee and a lemon tart to discuss developments in science, and work on his second book on radioactivity. When I wrote this tribute to Dr Lowenthal, gravity waves had just been detected.
Well Met
Robin Ford, February 2016
“Good morning, Doctor Ford, I trust you’re well.”
“Good morning Doctor Lowenthal, I’m fine.”
“I’ve edited that chapter, you can tell”
“And highlighted my comments, line by line.”
Oh Marie Curie! Oh mysterious rays!
Oh Rutherford! The atom’s form appears!
Oh Einstein! How you baffle and amaze;
New confirmation after five-score years.
Ripples in space when two black holes collide.
Massive device — a ‘henge’ —as you might say.
Gravity waves won’t bend to human pride.
Measured, they keep expanding on their way.
Oh universe! Though time on earth is fleeting,
And we are small, there’s power in a greeting.
